During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

the healing power of intermittent fasting

The idea behind calorie restriction and fasting is not new in medicine but modern pharmaceuticals may like to protray it as a ‘recent fad’. Science is going ‘back to the future’ in rediscovering the power of intermittent fasting as seen in recent documentaries like the BBC’s Eat, Fast and Live Longer.

Initially you might think denying oneself of food might have the oppostie effect to healing. However every time we eat food causes the body to go into a state of low level inflammation. When we are constantly eating the body has no time to repair.

Headaches, poor digestion, allergies, weight issues, anxiety and pain can all be attributed to the body not having time to detox and repair.

Whilst juice fasting gives more rapid effects it can be a shock for some peoples body, other methods of healthy calorie restricted eating can provide the same benefits they just need to be adhered to for longer periods of time. why detox?

Detoxing is about giving our body a break. Far from being a modern fad, the philosophy of detoxification began thousands of years ago. In Ayurveda detox was an important part of health routines for emotional and physical cleansing. It’s not just about food either. Emotions also have a toxic effect on the body and if not dealt with can be stored. Detoxification is about breaking from the routine of daily life to allow time for the emotional and dietary toxins to be processed.

No matter how healthy your diet the body still needs time to cleanse and repair.  Think for a moment how much work the different organs in our body do daily. For example the liver is responsible for controlling blood sugar levels, synthesising cholesterol, blood cleansing, immune function, and detoxification of chemicals such as waste products of metabolism and breakdown of old hormones! Detoxification is a way to give the body a break and allow the liver and other parts of our digestive system to “catch up”.  In this cleaner state the body functions more efficiently and as such many clients feel energised, have better skin, notice an improvement in mood and their weight normalises.

There are many types of detox plans ranging from juice fasting to raw food to cooked Ayurvedic food and many combinations. Some allow detoxification faster than others, and its important to factor in individual biochemical differences in people as well as lifestyle. It’s essential your body is suitably nourished before the program as the detoxification pathways require specific vitamins and minerals. All the channels of elimination in the body must be functioning at their best as well to deal with the release of toxins. Detox is really about hitting the reset button in the body.

The liver is one of the key organs in the body. It has so many tasks if it’s not healthy then it cannot perform all these tasks efficiently, leaving us feeling tired, prone to weight gain, and hormonal balances.

The  liver is responsible for controlling blood sugar levels, synthesising cholesterol, blood cleansing, immune function, and detoxification of chemicals such as waste products of metabolism and breakdown of old hormones!

When the liver is overworked – it stores toxins in fat cells which are a ‘safe’ place where the toxins don’t harm the body, resulting in cellulite. Only when the liver is functioning optimally will it have time to work through all these stored toxins. Sometimes people can’t lose weight because the body is too toxic and holding on to the fat cells as a way to protect itself from toxins.

Detoxification is a way to give the body a break and allow the liver and other parts of our digestive system to “catch up”.  In this cleaner state the body functions more efficiently and as such many clients feel energised, have better skin, notice an improvement in mood and their weight normalises.

Maintenance eating after a detox will really help extend the benefits and increase your health. Think to eat ‘clean’ food free of toxins as this is going to lessen the load on your liver – fill your diet with lots of organic fruit and vegetables.  Hydration is also key, so consider introducing more fluids such as water, herbal tea and coconut water into your day and eliminating dehydrating and toxin forming items such as alcohol, coffee, fried and salty foods.
